  2. 'We showed really good quality'

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "You can't feel sorry for yourself, football is football but I was hugely proud of the boys today, I thought tactically we were really good, in terms of the discipline, we stuck with it against a team who are up there with the best around at the moment so we knew it was going to be a tough test and they unloaded the bench with the cavalry towards the end and we stuck with it.

"We were in it, we had moments, I thought at times we showed really good quality to play out of the pressure and take the ball and have that confidence even though we obviously had to defend for spells but we knew they were good at set plays and that's where the majority of their chances came from. "

On Villa making four changes: "I took that as a real positive, whether it was planned for them or not, I don't know but they wanted to win the game like ourselves we were right into, we were growing into it. I can't fault the boys, I thought they were terrific today. I'm really really proud of them."

On Tuesday's game against Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi-final: "Tuesday is different, this was a one off and obviously it's the first round for us [third round overall]. Tuesday is that bit closer, it's a different kind of opportunity and hopefully this place will be rocking and what I expect on Tuesday is a different type of feeling really. The boys will be really looking forward to it. Massive challenge with a terrific team and unbelievable players but we'll take that on and we've earned it so you've got to be in it to win it."

  3. 'We deserved it' - Emery

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (2)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manger Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Sport after the game: "We were remembering before the match the past few years wehave not qualified past the third round.

"But today we playedseriously for 90 minutes with a game plan and we controlled the game alot.

"We created not very clear chances, but in the second half we created very goodchances and they had some good attacks.

"We were keeping in our mind the game plan and our passions.

"At the end we won and more or less I think we deserved it."

On Aston Villa's mentality: "The mentality you have to be there everyday and you haveto get experiences and see what we are facing.

"We werekeeping in our mind the game plan and until the last minute we were trying tobe very positive in our area and at the end we won. It was fantastic."

On Middlesbrough: "They had very good players trying to combinate and play withpossession and trying to get in behind."

On no VAR: "I think it was not necessary today."

On set pieces: "Every team is working a lot on them. We arefocusing a lot and we are trying to be demanding on how we can improve."

On competing in three competitions: "Which competition is the most important? We have to go into eachmatch and get the best result. The first target is to be consistent through the Premier League and then to try be consistent in the Conference League and the FA Cup.

"But of course we have to be consistent and we have to faceeach competition and improve."

  4. 'We deserved to win'

    FT: Chelsea 4-0 Preston

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (3)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino speaking to BBC Sport: "Yes a very good win. The first half I was a little disappointed. We started so sloppy. I told the players at half-time we needed to increase the energy and match that of Preston.

"The second half was a completely different game. We dominated, created chances and deserved victory. We showed a lack of desire in the first half and we were talking too much about their energy. They were better than us in this area. I was really disappointed but after we increased our level we started to play and deserved to win."

Will Armando Broja's goal give him confidence? "I think it should be amazing. He should smile, be positive and change his body language. I think when he performs well and finds the net he will improve. It's important for the team and for him to improve his confidence."

On Enzo Fernandez's performance: "The team was improving with time and it was an important game for Enzo Fernandez to feel he could perform at a high level."

On coaching a young team: "We are a young team that needs to be build through results but also performances to get confidence. It will be tough but we are looking forward to the semi-final.

"I think it's a massive responsibility because we are Chelsea. Of course I am enjoying it. That is the pressure. I'm a coach that loves to win and be competitive but at the same time we need to give time to the young kids so they can improve and mature. We need to find a balance. It's a matter of time before the team will perform because we have the quality. We have a group and team to be better."

Who do you want next? "It doesn't matter who. We hope to play here at Stamford Bridge as that would be better for us."

  5. 'Hopefully many more goals'

    FT: Chelsea 4-0 Preston

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (4)

    Chelsea

Chelsea striker Armando Broja speaking to BBC: "Of course, it was a good performance at the end. We struggled a little in the first half to get going, they were defending well. Then we made an adjustment and the first goal opened up the game.

"I just tried to get myself into the box. I saw it was an opportunity for them to deliver a cross in and I tried to get my head on it. It wasn't a bad header!

"At the beginning it was difficult to break them down. They were quite deep and narrow but we made some adjustments and the game opened up. We created more opportunities and played more of our football.

"We're a very young squad, everyone knows that. We have a completely new team with a lot of young players. We try to bond together and it's good to build that for many years to come."

Was scoring a relief? "A little bit. Coming off the bench and playing a few games and not scoring is not easy. I'm really excited and happy I could get that goal today. Hopefully there's many more in the future.

"Moments like that is what makes you happy and puts a smile on your face. A lot of people don't see the down days. There's a lot of pressure on your shoulders when you're expected to score every game. I try to leave the down days past me and look ahead to the good days. Today was one of those better days."

  7. 'No disgrace being beaten by Chelsea'

    FT: Chelsea 4-0 Preston

Preston manager Ryan Lowe speaking to BBC: "The scoreline reflects the scoreline. We're disappointed with three of the goals. We need to stop the cross and then there were a few errors that led to quality players punishing us.

"We were fantastic for 58 minutes. I'm proud of the boys and they did everything we asked them to do. Sometimes you're undone by quality players and that's what happened today.

"These lads have played 27 games now. Chelsea have got good quality players and probably are a bit more robust than some.

"Three goals in 11 minutes was the damage. But the boys had a fantastic day out and we need to take that 58 minutes into 90+5 minutes against Bristol City and we'll be fine.

"There's a few things we could stop but there's good movements from quality players so there's no disgrace coming here and getting beaten by a good side like Chelsea.

"We've got to put a performance in like that for 95 minutes but I've seen loads from the lads to show what we can do."

  9. 'We held our own'

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (5)

    Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick, speaking to BBC Sport: "Hugely proud. The disappointment the lads are feeling shows how well we performed in the game. It was not easy against such a good team. We had good moments, when we had the chance to play we had some good connections and looked dangerous at times.

"I feel for the boys, they put a lot of effort in but it will give us a lot of confidence going into next week's Carabao Cup semi-final.

"We take so much from this. Hopefully the boys will take a lot from the feeling. Villa are one of the best teams around at the moment and I thought the boys held their own.

"I thought the way we adapted, the way we stuck with it, there were loads of good signs and I am really proud."

On Tuesday's game against Chelsea in EFL Cup semi-final: "We know the quality Chelsea have. They can change a game at any moment but we look forward to it. It is a massive opportunity for us and we will give it our best."

  10. 'Boro are a tough team'

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (6)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa's defender Matty Cash, speaking to BBC Sport: "A goal is a goal, so I am buzzing with it.

"I have worked on it in training outside the box to finish, we have worked on having three around the edge and my instinct was to shoot.

"We work really hard on them and credit to Austin MacPhee [set piece coach].

"Boro are a tough team and have a top manager, they are doing well in the Championship and the main priority for us was to get the win.

"In the first half we found some good spaces on the left and the game plan was to continue that. It took some time, but we finally got there.

"The manager had made it clear in the hotel that we had not done well in this competition. It is nice to finally do that tonight [progress past third round].

"The manager is so good at that and whatever competition we are in we go out and do our best to get the result. In Europe we are doping well and the league and tonight as well.

On Emery's impact on Cash: "He has improved me a lot and we have a full-back coach as well. In recent weeks I have struggled with my calf but hopefully I can go on and kick on."

  11. Post update

FT: Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 Cardiff City

What a crazy game at Hillsborough.

A lovely strike from Josh Windass put Sheffield Wednesday ahead in the second minute, before Cardiff saw two penalties saved by Cameron Dawson. That all happened in the opening seven minutes.

An own goal made it 2-0, before another brilliant strike from Liam Palmer made it 3-0 at the break.

Millik Wilks sealed the win and the Owls' place in round four.

A 4-0 defeat is pretty emphatic, but Cardiff certainly didn't deserve to be on the end of such a heavy defeat. They just lacked quality in both boxes.

    FT: Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (8)

    Neil Lennon

Former Celtic manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Really good cup tie, the game really opened up in the second half.

It was a tactical battle in the first half, Middlesbrough had done their homework and played very very well defensibly and then the game opened up.

Although just before half-time, Middlesbrough had a great chance to take the lead and that would have had a big psychological effect on the game.

Villa showed their quality, worked the goalkeeper, Tom Glover made a couple of great saves. It's really difficult on Middlesbrough but probably on chances, Villa edged it.

  15. 'We had to be defensively strong'

    Middlesbrough 0-1 Aston Villa

    Relive Saturday's FA Cup third-round action (9)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, speaking to BBC Sport: "We knew it wasn't going to be easy. Middlesbrough are a good team. We had to come here and be defensively strong and we did that today.

"There were moments they put us under pressure but we defended well and got the win.

"Since I have been here we've not gone before the third round before. It has been tough. At the end all I could think about was getting the win."

  16. FULL-TIME

    Chelsea 4-0 Preston

All over. Chelsea coast through in the end. Preston were excellent first half but their tiredness paid a price in the second half.

    Dion Dublin

Former England striker on BBC One

Aston Villa had to find something and it was a bit of luck in the end. I think Michael Carrick will look at his side and think they did everything he asked.

Villa fans will be happy and Middlesbrough fans will be proud.

  18. Sheffield Wednesday through to round four
